Fueling a Destroyer at the Port

fuel barge at work

The USS John Hall visited Pensacola in November of 1998 to help celebrate Pensacola's Military Appreciation Week. Pensacola has been a Navy town for many years but now members from most branches of the Armed Forces of the US as well as members of the Armed Forces of many countries are trained in Pensacola at the Naval Air Station. The USS John Hall was docked at the Port of Pensacola for a few days and offered tours to the public. This photo shows her taking fuel from a fuel barge before her departure. Ship side fueling by barge is an economical way for ships to take large quanities of diesel or other bunker fuel for propulsion.
