Fishing on Bayou Chico

This is the only portion of the old Bayou Chico railroad trestle that remains today. It originally ran from downtown to the Navy Yard before it became the Naval Air Station. The line was removed after WW II but the bridge still remained with the drawbridge portion in the up position. Many old photos of the bayou show the bridge, the original of which was destroyed in the 1926 hurricane. This portion will be removed at the same time the old Bayou Chico drawbridge is demolished. The new Bayou Chico highrise bridge was opened to traffic in February of 1999 and the old bridge will be removed to improve navigation and the water quality by improved flushing.
